After suffering a traumatic experience that caused him to lose his wife and daughter, Michael Polito (Bridges) can see things no one else can. He claims to be able to see other people, beings, that walk among us. They are the ones that cause car accidents, fires, and other atrocities. His psychiatrist (Pearce) joins him on a remarkable journey to find out what really lies out there in the darkness, what's around the corner when you're not looking.

The Scene Opens on Michael Polito (Bridges) making coffee. His daughter, Jane, (Hathaway) is sitting at the table eating cereal. His wife Vicky (Pidgeon) is sitting across from her reading the paper. Michael serves Vicky a cup of coffee.

MICHAEL
Good morning.

Michael kisses Vicky. Vicky puts her hand on top of Michaels. The phone rings. Michael answers it. Its his son Josh (Hatosy)

MICHAEL
Hello?

JOSH (V.O.)
Hey dad. Whats up?

MICHAEL
Hey Josh. Hows school?

JOSH (V.O.)
Great. I was just calling to see how things were doing.

MICHAEL
Doing good. You want to talk to your mother?

JOSH (V.O.)
Sure. Put her on.

Vicky gets up and grabs the phone.

VICKY
I love you

JOSH (V.O.)
I love you too Mom.

VICKY
When are you going to come and see us?

JOSH (V.O.)
I got a lot of tests this week, but maybe next week. I havent seen you in like forever.

VICKY
You need to come home every once in a while. I miss you.

JANE (O.S.)
Hey. Lemme talk to him.

VICKY
Im putting your sister on.

Jane runs to the phone.

JANE
Hey dork.

JOSH (V.O.)
Hey sis. Hows your senior year? You ready to graduate?

JANE
Only 37 days left.

JOSH (V.O.)
Ill be there.

JANE
Youd better be or Im coming out there and Im gonna kick your butt.

JOSH (V.O.)
Sure. Whatever. You couldnt kick my butt.

Jane laughs.

JANE
Well. We gotta leave. Cant be late.

JOSH (V.O.)
Are you top twenty?

JANE
Barely. Im like 19 or 18.

JOSH (V.O.)
Trust me. It pays off.

JANE
OK. See ya later.

JOSH (V.O.)
Love ya. Bye.

Jane hangs up the phone.

CUT TO: INT: THE SUBURBAN
driving down the road. Michael is driving, Vicky sits in the passengers seat and Jane in the back.

JANE
Great. Ive got this huge history exam today and its not raining.

MICHAEL
Why does it matter?

JANE
I always do well when its raining.

VICKY
If you paid attention in class, you should still do terrific honey.

JANE
Thats easy for you to say. You havent seen Mr. Blacks 100 question exams.


MICHAEL
Thats not too bad. Are they multiple choice?

JANE
50 multiple choice, 25 short answer, 20 fill in the blank, and 5 essays. Can you believe that psycho? He wants us to write FIVE essays!

MICHAEL
I will admit thats a bit much.

They pull up in front of Twin Towers Memorial High School. Jane gets out of the car and waves it goodbye.

VICKY
(shouting) Bye! Have a good day!

The car pulls away.

MICHAEL
Did I tell you about the Verhoven case?

VICKY
I dont remember. Tell me again.

MICHAEL
We arrested a guy on Friday who was responsible for striking an eight year old boy with his car. Turns out that hes been striking little boys with his car for years.

VICKY
Howd you find out?

MICHAEL
He told us to look in his basement. We found 18 dead little boys in his basement. Forensics came back and it suggested that he had raped some of them afterwards. Some of those kids had been missing for over 3 years.

VICKY
What about the Verhoven kid? Is he OK?

MICHAEL
Hes lucky. Only a few broken ribs. The thing that sickens me is that its possible that he raped some of them after they died. Of course it wouldnt be any better if they were alive.

They pull up in front of a high-rise building. Vicky opens her door.

VICKY
Dont get too stressed now.
(Vicky kisses Michael, he kisses back)
Ill see you tonight. Carol is giving me a ride home, all you need to do is pick up Jane.

MICHAEL
Got it.

Vicky steps out of the car and waves at it as it pulls away.

FADE TO: INT: THE POLICE STATION
Michaels office. Michael is sitting at his desk doing paperwork when Detective Clark Sampson (Woods) enters the room with Detective Sara Kent (Allen) at his side.

CLARK
Hey Mikey. Got somebody for you to meet. Our new partner, Detective Sara Kent.

SARA
Pleased to meet you. Your reputation proceeds you.

Michael stands up and offers his hand. She shakes it.

MICHAEL
Our new partner eh?

CLARK
Just for a little while. Saras got experience but shes new to the area.

MICHAEL
Where you from?

SARA
Chicago.

MICHAEL
Rough town.

SARA
47th precinct. The rich side of town. I was stuck mostly with cases involving Income Tax evasion and whatnot.

MICHAEL
So you transferred here and got the dirtiest job in the city?

SARA
Exactly.

CLARK
Chief says shes our partner for the next couple weeks, till she feels at home and ready to team up with a rookie.

SARA
I hate rookies.

MICHAEL
You have to remember that even the greatest of detectives started out

SARA
Yeah. I know. As rookies.

MICHAEL
Glad to have you on the team. Im sure Clark has already pointed out to you where you can find the doughnuts?

CLARK
Right this way.

SARA
It was a pleasure meeting you again Detective Polito.

MICHAEL
Enjoy the doughnuts Miss Kent.

Michael sits back down at his desk.

CUT TO: EXT: ALLEYWAY
Crime Scene. Sara, Clark, and Michael are investigating with a few others standing around.

OFFICER 1
It appears that the body was stabbed in the chest, possibly piercing the heart.

Sara looks queasy.

MICHAEL
First murder?

SARA
Second. I worked a murder/suicide once.

CLARK
Bet that was dirty.

SARA
What?

CLARK
Blood everywhere. Brains on the wall.

Sara turns and vomits. Michael hits Clarks arm.

MICHAEL
Dont be such a dick.

Clark salutes Michael

CLARK
Yes sir Captain Michael sir!

Sara crouches down over the mutilated body.

OFFICER 1
(pointing to a bleeding hole in the neck)
See this wound here?

SARA
Not the fatal wound.


OFFICER 1
How do you figure that?

SARA
See the blood on the nails?

OFFICER 1
Probably in a struggle.

SARA
The pockets are sticking out. Someone emptied them.

CLARK
That doesnt convince me.

SARA
This man was mugged. The mugger was probably a street person who had lost it. The first wounds were in the chest and back.

MICHAEL
You can be sure?

SARA
That and (to Officer 2) Gloves?

OFFICER 2
Sure.

Sara puts on the gloves.

SARA
This.

Sara reaches into the neck wound and pulls out the tip of the knife.

CLARK
How

SARA
He lost part of his knife leading me to believe that this was the last wound he inflicted because the knife wouldnt have worked so well after. Judging by the amount of wounds on the body it is my guess he bled to death before this wound was inflicted.

MICHAEL
Impressive. Worthy of a beer, but I dont drink.

CLARK
Michaels a good christian fellow.

SARA
I bet.

MICHAEL
Besides, I gotta go and pick up Jane at school.

SARA
You have a daughter.

MICHAEL
And a son, Josh who is away at college. My wife Vicky is an accountant for San Domingo Inc.

CLARK
See ya tomorrow.

MICHAEL
Yeah.

Michael gets in his suburban and pulls away.


CUT TO: INT: HOME- KITCHEN
. They are eating dinner.

MICHAEL
Howd you do on the test?

JANE
Terrific. I actually knew everything that was on the test.

VICKY
See? I told you youd do well.

JANE
I need you guys to sign a release form.

VICKY
For what?

JANE
Nothing much. They just need it so they can put my name in the paper.

MICHAEL
For what?

JANE
(elated) Surprise! Im Salutitorian!

MICHAEL
What?

VICKY
Number two in her class.

MICHAEL
I thought you were barely in the top twenty?



JANE
That was last semester. Cassandra, the girl who was number 1 at the beginning of the year had to drop out cause she got pregnant. Justin, the guy who was 13th was the guy who got her pregnant. He dropped out too.

VICKY
Oh.

MICHAEL
Congratulations. Of course Ill sign.

FADE TO: INT: UPSTAIRS BEDROOM
. Vicky and Michael are getting ready for bed.

MICHAEL
Shes doing great, ya know?

VICKY
Yeah, shes been taught well.

MICHAEL
Im so proud of her.

Michael sits down on the bed.

VICKY
Youre new partner? She good?

MICHAEL
She reminds me of you. Shes a grab em by the balls type of girl.

Vicky laughs and sits down next to Vicky.

VICKY
I hope shes not too much like me. I wouldnt want you to accidentally go home to her.

MICHAEL
Thatll never happen.

Michael kisses Vicky and they lay on the bed together.

Fade to Black.

INT: THE BEDROOM
. It is dark. A scream is heard. Michael flips on the light

VICKY
(screaming) Michael!

Michael turns and sees a man, Jack (Robert Carlyle) standing behind Vicky with his left arm around her throat and his right arm holding a gun to her head.

MICHAEL
Hold on honey. Itll be OK.


JACK
No it wont. Dont lie.

VICKY
(screaming)
Help me!

MICHAEL
Im a police officer. You dont want to do this. Theyll throw the book at you.

JACK
Are you sure about that?

MICHAEL
Put the gun down.

JACK
Make me.

VICKY
Michael. Help me.

JACK
Whats your worst fear Michael?

MICHAEL
Please. Take me instead.

Michael mouths I love you to Vicky. Vicky mouths I love you to Michael

JACK
Exactly.

Jack pulls the trigger and shoots Vicky in the head. The blood sprays on the wall.

MICHAEL
God.

Michael stands up and backs to the wall. He puts his head inside his face and starts to cry.

JACK
Your turn.

Micheal looks at Jack.

MICHAEL
Shoot me. What have I got to lose.

Jack points the gun at Michael and fires. It whizzes right past his ear and into the wall.

MICHAEL
Jesus.


JACK
Missed. This time, I wont.

Jack pulls the trigger again and the gun clicks.

JACK
Oh shit.

Michael charges Jack and knocks him against the wall. Jack hits Michael over the head with the gun. Michael falls to the ground, unconscious.

Fade to black.

INT: THE BEDROOM
. Michael is awakening. He awakens and sees Vickys body lying dead on the floor looking at him. He begins to cry.

MICHAEL
Vicky.

He turns over and doesnt see Jack. Hes still semi-crying.

MICHAEL
Jane!

He gets up.

MICHAEL
Jane! Where are you?

He stumbles out of the room.

MICHAEL
Jane, honey, we have to get out of here.

He continues to stumble down the hallway to her room, the door is cracked open. He pushes on it.

MICHAEL
Jane?

It opens. He sees Janes body lying lifeless on the floor in front of the door. Michael drops to his knees, picks up Janes head and holds it to his chest and cries.

CUT TO: KITCHEN
. Michael is sitting at the table staring off into space. Sara and Clark also sit at the table.

CLARK
Were gonna get this guy.

MICHAEL
Why me?

CLARK
Well get him.


SARA
Everyones gonna pitch in. With your description well have this guy in 24 hours tops. Hell be all over the news. He wont be able to move in this city.

Michael turns to Clark.

MICHAEL
I cant. (pause) Can (pause) I need you to talk to Josh.

CLARK
Of course. Whatever you need. Im here.

SARA
Im going to take you down to the station. Its the safest place right now. He might try to finish the job.

MICHAEL
If I didnt have Josh left. Id kill myself.

CLARK
Come on now. Dont say that.

MICHAEL
Im gonna get him. Hes going to pay.

The camera focuses on Michaels head and a tear falls from his eye.

The screen pans across the room and changes to:

INT: The Station. Michael is lying on a cot in his office staring at the ceiling. We can see through the window Clark and Josh (Hatosy) coming in. Clark points to the office and Josh runs to it crying. He opens the door and Michael gets up.

JOSH
Dad.

Michael moves to Josh.

MICHAEL
Im so (bursts into tears) sorry.

Michael and Josh embrace.

JOSH
Im here dad.

Sara comes to the door.

SARA
A man over at the 15th said they had picked up a guy earlier today that fit the description. He shot and killed a drug dealer. He broke out of custody earlier this evening.

MICHAEL
Do we know where he is right now?

SARA
No. Im sorry. I just thought you might want to know.

MICHAEL
Thanks Sara. Josh, this is Detective Sara Kent, shes Clark and Is new partner.

JOSH
I appreciate what youre doing. If I can help, let me know.

MICHAEL
Josh is majoring in Criminal Law at Boston College.

SARA
My father is a professor there.

JOSH
Mark Kent. Hes my ethics professor.

SARA
Ill leave you two alone.

Michael and Josh sit down on the cot together.

Fade to Black

CUT TO: HOME.

SIX WEEKS LATER

Michael is eating breakfast at the table. Josh comes in the room.

JOSH
That was Uncle Beau. Him and his new wife Kelly are coming into town.

MICHAEL
A little late for the funeral arent they.

JOSH
He didnt get the message. He was on a honeymoon down in South America for 2 months.

MICHAEL
2 months?

JOSH
Hell be in tonight.

MICHAEL
Well. Hes still family.

Michael gets up and pushes his chair in.

FADE TO: THE FOYER
that evening. Michael opens the door to reveal Beau Rodgers (Sam Neill) and his wife Kelly Rodgers (Jodi Lyn OKeefe).

BEAU
Michael. Its been a long time.

Beau and Kelly step inside. Michael offers his hand to Kelly.

MICHAEL
Michael Polito.

KELLY
Kelly Martino Sanchez Rodgers

MICHAEL
Thats quite a name.

KELLY
My father is a columbian drug lord.

BEAU
Shes just kidding.

MICHAEL
I sure hope so.

They move into the family room. Michael, Beau and Kelly sit down on the couch.

BEAU
Actually, shes an actress.

MICHAEL
Anything Ive seen you in?

KELLY
Maybe.

BEAU
I dont think so.

KELLY
What kind of movies do you watch?

Awkward pause.

MICHAEL
The Harrison Ford kind.

KELLY
Ah. I dont do Hollywood.

Beau kisses Kelly.

BEAU
Kellys a special actress.


MICHAEL
Josh! We need some alcohol in here. ASAP

Josh walks into the room with 4 beers.

KELLY
I like you.

BEAU
Please Kelly. Calm yourself.

JOSH
Im Josh.

KELLY
Kelly.

Josh hands out the beers.

KELLY
Im really tired. That was a long flight.
(to Josh)
Would you like to take me to bed?

JOSH
Excuse me?

KELLY
My room?

JOSH
Oh.

MICHAEL
Go on.

Josh and Kelly get up and leave the room.

BEAU
It killed me you know?

MICHAEL
Lets not talk about it. Im really trying to move on.

BEAU
Any luck on the killer?

MICHAEL
No. Can we change the topic?

BEAU
OK. So how about them Cowboys?

MICHAEL
Shes a pretty wife.

BEAU
Oh yeah. Shes great.

MICHAEL
Im sure the fact shes a porn star had nothing to do with


BEAU
Nope. I love her.

MICHAEL
Strange. I guess someone has to marry her. It might as well be you.

BEAU
Well stay for a few days if you dont mind.

MICHAEL
Be my guest.

CUT TO: POLICE STATION
. Michaels office. Clark and Michael are talking about something when Sara comes in the room.

SARA
Wanna grab a bite to eat.

CLARK
Im game.

MICHAEL
Me too.

CUT TO: POLICE CAR
. Michael is driving. Sara sits in the front seat, Sara in the back. They are on a busy highway. Clark is taking a quick nap in the back seat. Michael looks to his left and seems to see a quick glimpse of Jane standing on the side of the road.

MICHAEL
(in a whisper)
Jane?

Michael turns his head around and sees Vicky standing in the middle of the highway right in front of him. He slams on his brakes. The car fishtails a 180 and is now facing a semi.

SARA
Michael! Watch out!

Clark wakes up.

Michael slams the car in reverse and goes backwards down the highway with the semi barrelling toward them

SARA
Michael. Pull over!

CLARK
Michael!

He pulls the car off the road into the median strip of grass in the road.

Michael, Clark, and Sara get out of the car.


MICHAEL
I swear to God I saw her. Id bet my life on it.

CLARK
Who?

MICHAEL
Vicky.

SARA
Jesus.

CLARK
Listen. Tomorrow, youre gonna see a friend of mine. Hell help you get through this.

MICHAEL
Im not crazy. I really saw her.

SARA
Michael

CLARK
As your partner Im asking you to get help. As your friend Im telling you to get help.

MICHAEL
OK.

CUT TO: INT: CARSON WALKERS OFFICE- WAITING ROOM
A secretary sits at a desk fixing her nails while Michael sits in a chair reading Time magazine. The phone beeps.

SECRETARY
Hell see you now.

MICHAEL
Is that a secret code?

SECRETARY
No.

Michael gets up and moves into
INT: CARSONS ROOM
. Michael walks in and Carson (Pearce) approaches him with his outstretched hand.

CARSON
Carson Walker. My friend Clark tells me youve been seeing things.

Michael shakes Carsons hand.

MICHAEL
Clark talks too much.

Carson moves behind his desk and sits down. Michael sits on the couch across from him.

MICHAEL
So there really are couches in shrinks offices

CARSON
I find them to be much more relaxing then a straight-back chair, dont you think?

MICHAEL
Yes. I suppose.

CARSON
How do you know Clark?

MICHAEL
Im his partner. You?

CARSON
I didnt know Clark was gay. That comes.

MICHAEL
No no no. Partner as in, Im Detective Michael Polito.

CARSON
Oh. Sorry.

MICHAEL
How did you know Clark?

CARSON
We grew up next door to each other.

MICHAEL
Oh.

CARSON
Tell me about yourself.

MICHAEL
Im a detective. I have been for the past 21 years.

CARSON
Wife? Kids?

MICHAEL
(long pause)
About two months ago my wife and daughter were killed by a psychopath right in front of me.

CARSON
God. Im sorry.

MICHAEL
Its OK. I know you have to ask those questions. Im OK now.

CARSON
What did you see?


MICHAEL
When?

CARSON
The day that you had the vision.

MICHAEL
It wasnt a vision. It was real. Clear. I saw my wife standing in the middle of the road in front of me.

CARSON
What did you do?

MICHAEL
Hit the brakes, the car fishtailed around and I almost got killed by a semi.

CARSON
Why do you think you saw her?

MICHAEL
I miss her. When someone you wake up to every morning is killed in front of your eyes.

CARSON
Yeah. I understand.

MICHAEL
My son Josh was away at college. If he wasnt alive, I wouldnt be alive either.

CARSON
Anything else you want to get off your shoulders?

MICHAEL
Are you new?

CARSON
Actually (pause) I am.

MICHAEL
Thought so. You didnt seem like you were a real professional at this.

CARSON
I used to be Clarks old partner down in Miami.

MICHAEL
What changed?

CARSON
I saw a man kill his daughter and get away because a rookie cop forgot to read the miranda rights. Its not like the guy confessed or anything. I watched a girls life become pointless because protocol was breached.

MICHAEL
I know what youre saying. But you can do more good on the streets trying to protect the kids who are still alive.


CARSON
I figured maybe I could stop the psychos before they become psycho.

MICHAEL
I have to get going. Next Tuesday?

CARSON
My door is open. Any friend of Clark is a friend of mine.

MICHAEL
Im going out on a limb here but Im going to say Im your first client.

CARSON
Second. My mother came to a session.

MICHAEL
Mothers. Cant live without em.

CUT TO: DREAM SEQUENCE
The following is played to Ushers U Remind Me

A- Michael and Vicky are sitting on a white couch in a white room kissing.
B- Jane walks in wearing a white blouse and white jeans.
C- Michael gets up and hugs Jane.
D- Vicky gets up and signals Jane out of the room.
E- CUT TO: REALITY- Michael is sleeping in bed. His breathing grows rapid.
F- CUT TO: DREAM The room is red now. Everything except Michael is red. Vicky is wearing a red dress and Michael is wearing a white shirt with white slacks.
G- Vickys eyes become pure red. She reaches behind her back and pulls out a butcher knife.
H- Michael smiles.
I- Vicky pulls the knife up in the air preparing to stab Michael
J- CUT TO: REALITY- Michael wakes up. His breathing is really rapid.

MICHAEL
Shit.

CUT TO: INT: CARSONS ROOM
Michael is just walking through the door. Carson is sitting at his desk doing nothing, but when Michael walks in he ruffles a few papers to make it look like he was busy.

CARSON
Michael. This isnt Tuesday.


MICHAEL
Whats wrong with me?

CARSON
Pardon?

MICHAEL
I cant. I (pause) I had a dream last night.

CARSON
What was it about?

MICHAEL
I cant remember. I just remember Vicky trying to kill me.

CARSON
Youre upset. Do you want some medication?

MICHAEL
What?

CARSON
I can give you some drugs to help you relax.

MICHAEL
How new are you?

CARSON
Why?

MICHAEL
Your diagnoses for me is to just take a pill?

CARSON
Sorry. Thats everybodys answer these days.

MICHAEL
Im not everybody. Im looking for closure. Im looking for sanity.

CARSON
You just want to talk?

MICHAEL
No. Youve ticked me off. Im leaving.

Michael storms out.

CUT TO: INT: RESTAURANT CRIME SCENE
Sara, Clark, Michael, Officer 2 and Officer 3 are present. Plus a corpse is lying face down on a table. Officer 3 is taking photos.

SARA
Glad to have you back.

MICHAEL
I have to learn to move on. It isnt healthy to just not do anything.

CLARK
If you need more time, youve got it.

MICHAEL
No. I need to take my mind off it.

Michael moves to the corpse. He lifts up the head. He sees Vickys face. He closes his eyes and reopens them. The face turns back into the corpse with a bullet in the head.

MICHAEL
What have we got.

OFFICER 2
Bullet wound to the head.

CLARK
Thank you mister obvious.

OFFICER 2
A witness said the shooter was wearing a ski mask.

MICHAEL
What was the weapon.

OFFICER 2
A gun.

MICHAEL
(sarcastically)
Really? Well case closed. Bullet wound to the head and Sherlock here has the weapon of choice being a gun. Promote him. Make him the chief!

Clark laughs.

SARA
Dont be so harsh. From the assumed range Id guess an eight millimeter, but until the test comes back, we wont know for sure.

MICHAEL
Could this be the same guy?

CLARK
As what?

SARA
Hes right.

CLARK
Michael. No. Dont go there.


MICHAEL
A witness heard the guy ask him what his worst fear was. Is it even remotely possible these two are connected?

SARA
A serial?

CLARK
Another witness also said he thought the guy was black.

MICHAEL
He was a rich white guy that could have easily just stereotyped the killer. I think we may have our John Doe.

SARA
Its possible.

MICHAEL
Five bucks says it was the same gun used here that killed Vicky and Jane.

CLARK
Youre on.

CUT TO: INT: POLICE STATION
Clark, Michael and Sara are standing together at the coffee machine. Officer 3 walks up holding a file.

OFFICER 3
Turns out youre right. Its a perfect match. Same gun.

CLARK
Wow.

OFFICER 3
Congratulations. You may get your revenge after all.

Officer 3 walks off.

MICHAEL
This guy is going down.

CUT TO: INT: HOME: KITCHEN
Michael, Josh, Beau, and Kelly are eating dinner.

BEAU
Kelly has a new job locally.

MICHAEL
Really?

KELLY
Yes. Youll never guess.

JOSH
Youre teaching nuclear physics to high school students.

KELLY
No silly.

MICHAEL
What?

KELLY
Im in a play. A real play!

BEAU
Evita.

KELLY
I get to be Evita.

JOSH
You can sing?

KELLY
Of course. Im an actress. I can do anything.

MICHAEL
Thats the spirit. You just keep telling yourself that.

KELLY
Oops. I have to go to the bathroom.

Kelly kisses Beau on the cheek and runs to the bathroom.

BEAU
Oh God. That woman is a complete airhead.

MICHAEL
But?

BEAU
Shes great. She can cook. She can clean. The sex

JOSH
Hear that?

BEAU
What?

JOSH

Josh gets up and leaves.

BEAU

MICHAEL

Michael is stunned. Kelly walks back into the room.

CUT TO: INT: JOSHS ROOM
Josh is sitting on his bed listening to his CD player. Michael walks in. Josh takes off his headphones.

JOSH
Hey Dad.

MICHAEL
We havent really talked.

JOSH
Come on Dad. We dont need to.

Michael sits down next to Josh.

MICHAEL
You know. One day, youll wake up. Youll think about your mom and youll be OK with however you feel about her

JOSH
What about you?

MICHAEL
Everyone thinks it was your mother I was upset about. That was only a pinprick compared to Jane. She was half of me. She represented a creation of me and your mother. I lost a part of me when she died.

Josh hugs Michael

JOSH
(crying)
I miss Mom.

MICHAEL
Me too Josh.

JOSH
I miss the way she used to smell. You could always tell when she was coming around the corner. She had a certain smell to her.

MICHAEL
Its OK.

Josh stops crying.

JOSH
Ive got homework to do.

MICHAEL

Josh wipes his eyes and flops down on his bed and turns away from Michael. Michael walks out and Josh starts to sob again.

CUT TO: DREAM SEQUENCE.
Michael is sitting on Carsons Couch. Carsons chair has his back turned to him.

MICHAEL
Carson?

The chair turns around and it is Vicky

VICKY
Stay away from the house.

MICHAEL
What?

VICKY
Hell come back.

MICHAEL
Who?

Michael wakes up.

MICHAEL
That was weird.

He turns over and sees Jane sitting on his bed.

JANE
Youre telling me.

END DREAM SEQUENCE
Michael wakes up for real and accidentally falls off the bed and cuts his leg open on something.

MICHAEL
Shit.

He gets up and limps out of the room.

CUT TO: INT: HOSPITAL ROOM

Michael is sitting on a bed with his leg outstretched. Someone is sewing his leg up. Josh is sitting next to his father.

MICHAEL
I cant believe I did this. This is so stupid of me.

THE DOCTOR
Its OK. It happens all the time.
(pause)
There we go.

The doctor stands up and we see that it is a cleaner version of Jack.

MICHAEL
Thank you Doctor

JACK
Jack.

JOSH
Just Jack?

JACK
Yes Josh. Just Jack.

JOSH
How did you know my name?

JACK
Your leg should heal within a day or two.

MICHAEL
OK.

JACK
Sorry about your wife. Such a tragedy.

MICHAEL
What?

JACK
You were in the paper. Some guy killed your wife and daughter right?

MICHAEL
I know you.

JACK
Dont think so.

MICHAEL
Youre him.

JACK
Sorry?

MICHAEL
You killed my wife.

JACK
Im a doctor, not a psychopath.

JOSH
Come on Dad. Theres no way. He works the night shift.

JACK
Probably just the pain medication. It makes people delirious sometimes.

A nurse walks in the room.


NURSE
Doctor Lee, we need you in post op. Your patient has gone into cardiac arrest.

Jack runs out of the room.

CUT TO: INT: HOME: FOYER AREA
Michael is opening the door to reveal Sara.

MICHAEL
Thanks for coming over. I tried to get a hold of Clark but he wasnt home.

SARA
Whats up?

MICHAEL
I think I saw him.

SARA
Who?

MICHAEL
The killer. My wifes killer.

SARA
Where?

Michael and Sara move into
INT: THE LIVING ROOM

MICHAEL
The hospital. Hes a doctor.

SARA
Whats his name?

MICHAEL
Jack Lee.

SARA
Thats my doctor.

MICHAEL
Really?

SARA
Tell you what. You take the day off and Ill stop by later tonight and give you some info. OK?

MICHAEL
Sure. My leg still hurts so maybe a day off isnt such a bad idea.

SARA
About seven?

MICHAEL
Thats fine.

Sara leaves the room. We hear a door open and close. Michael sits down on the couch.

MICHAEL
Wow.

Josh comes in the room.

JOSH
Who was that?

MICHAEL
Sara.

JOSH
She seems nice.

MICHAEL
Huh?

JOSH
Nothing. Just (pause) nothing.

Josh leaves the room.

CUT TO: INT: CARSONS OFFICE
Carson is sitting at his desk doing some paperwork. Jack walks in.

JACK
Doctor Walker?

CARSON
Yes?

JACK
Hi. Im Doctor Jack Lee. Im kind of in a personal dilemma right now. I was wondering if you could give me some advice?

CARSON
Sure.

JACK
I already wrote a check out to your secretary.

CARSON
OK. Please. Take a seat

Motions for Jack to sit on the couch.

JACK
Well. My wife and daughter were brutally murdered in front of my eyes. I want to seek revenge.

CARSON
Whoa.

JACK
What?

CARSON
You just (pause) talk about laying the cards down on the table.

JACK
Sorry for being so abrupt.

CARSON

JACK
Anyway, I saw the guy the other day. Should I do something about it.

CARSON
I cant tell you to kill anyone. I can only work you through what happened.

JACK

Jack gets up and leaves. Carson sits back in his chair.

CARSON

Carson gets up and opens his file cabinet and pulls out a file of Michael. He opens it and we see that the top sheet is a police sketch of the killer who looks exactly like Jack.

CARSON
Shit.

Carson picks up the phone and dials a number.

CARSON
Clark? Hey its Carson. We need to talk ASAP.

CUT TO: INT: HOME: KITCHEN
Michael and Sara are eating an intimate dinner.

SARA
Its nice of you to fix me dinner like this.

MICHAEL
Everybodys got to eat.

SARA
Youre a great cook. Im surprised.

MICHAEL
Why?

SARA
Ive never had a guy cook this good before.

MICHAEL
Oh.

SARA
Sorry.

MICHAEL
What did you find?

SARA
A few doctors said he was there that night but he had an on scene accident he was called to. He was gone for maybe an hour.

MICHAEL
Is that normal?

SARA
The other doctors say it is. I dont know. He seems clean.

MICHAEL
I could have sworn it was him.

Sara flicks some tomato sauce from her food onto her cheek.


MICHAEL
You have some (pause) sauce

Sara rubs the wrong cheek. Michael reaches across the table and wipes it off.

MICHAEL
There.

CUT TO: INT: MICHAELS BEDROOM
Michael and Sara kiss. She takes off his shirt. He looks at her in the eye and runs his hand through her hair.

SARA
Are you OK with this?

Michael kisses Sara again. The two fall back on the bed and kiss again.
Fade to Black

FADE IN: EXT: OUTSIDE THE HOME
Carson and Clark are coming up the walkway.

CARSON
Is he home?

CLARK
Cars in the driveway.

CARSON
Lights are off.

Joshs car pulls in the driveway. Josh gets out.

JOSH
Hey.

CARSON
Your dad home?

CLARK
Hey Josh.

JOSH
Sup.

Josh walks up to the front door. He touches it and it pushes open.

JOSH
Shit.

CLARK
Stay out here.
(to Carson)
Both of you.

Clark moves inside the house
INT: Foyer

SARA (O.S.)
(screaming) Leave us alone!

MICHAEL (O.S.)
You wont get away with this a second time.

Clark moves up the stairs with his gun ready. As he reaches the top of the stairs we hear more dialogue

JACK (O.S.)
I cant let you trying to come back and bite me in the ass now can I?

MICHAEL (O.S.)
Why did you do it?

JACK (O.S.)
Whats your worst fear Michael?

We hear a gun click. Clark sprints to the bedroom. He stands in the doorway. We can see Michael standing next to the bed with Sara curled up in the bed. Jack has the gun pointed on Saran while he is standing at the foot of the bed.

CLARK
Drop your weapon now!

Michael dives in front of Sara. Jack shoots at Sara, hitting Michael as he attempts to be a human shield. Clark shoots Jack in the side.

CUT TO: EXT: OUTSIDE THE HOUSE

JOSH
(in almost a whisper)
Dad

Josh runs in followed by Carson.

CUT TO: INT: BEDROOM

Jack whips toward Clark. Jack and Clark both fire a bullet at each other. Jack gets his in the chest. Clark in the shoulder. They each fire again. Jack is hit in the stomach, Clark in the head. Clark falls down dead. Jack drops to his knees. The camera moves to show Sara holding Michaels body and crying. He aims at her when the camera pans back to the doorway to reveal Josh holding Clarks gun. He empties the gun into Jack. Jack dies.

SARA
Call 911.

Josh moves to the bedroom phone and calls 911. Carson moves into the room.

CARSON
Is he

SARA
Not yet.

CUT TO: INT: HOME: LIVING ROOM
The words

One Month Later

Flash across the bottom of the screen.

We see Beau sitting on the couch and Michael sitting across from him.

MICHAEL
I asked you here to tell you that I loved your sister, but Im moving on.

BEAU
I thought you would.

MICHAEL
The killer is dead, my son is moving home

BEAU
I know what youre going to ask. Its fine with me.

MICHAEL
I want you to be the best man. Out of respect to Vicky.

BEAU
It would be a pleasure.

MICHAEL
Thanks.

Sara enters the room. We see that she is pregnant.

SARA
Hey.

Sara sits next to Beau.

BEAU
I hope you guys are happy. Really. After all you guys have been through, you deserve a great life.

MICHAEL
Thanks.

SARA
So what do I call you? Uncle Beau?

They all laugh and the camera backs away and
