TIMOTHY I'm not going anywhere. I've still got a good 15 to 20 years left in me. The Nurse walks in. NURSE Oh, Hello. BILLY Hi. I'm his son, Billy. Extends his hand. She shakes it. NURSE The doctor asked me to come in here too. He's on his way. Where's your wife? Janeane and Luke walk through the door. BILLY Right behind you. JANEANE What? Bobby comes through the door. TIMOTHY I love you too. Janeane starts to cry TIMOTHY I'll be fine. Don't worry about me. Billy and Bobby move to comfort their Mom TIMOTHY You guys look at me. I'm as strong.. BILLY as an Ox. We know Dad. Don't jinx yourself. They laugh. Dr Jones comes back in the room. The Nurse follows. DR JONES We ready? TIMOTHY I believe so. CUT TO: INT- HOSPITAL ROOM- Later that day. Luke is sitting on Janeane's lap. Billy is sitting on the floor across from her and Bobby is sitting on a chair next to Billy. BOBBY (to Billy) I didn't know you and Heather had a kid. BILLY Heather and I broke up. We didn't have a kid. You knew that. BOBBY Then whose is he? BILLY Mom and Dad's. He's your brother. BOBBY I didn't hear anything about that! BILLY What do you think Davy and Dad fought over? BOBBY What? BILLY Davy found out that Mom was pregnant. Of course he was drunk at the time, didn't know what he was saying, and Dad hit him. No one has spoken to him since. BOBBY That was 8 years ago. BILLY When was the last time you saw Davy. BOBBY He called me the day after Dad hit him. I came over, remember? BILLY Yeah. BOBBY Mom. I'm sorry. I just heard Davy's side. I never stopped to hear yours. JANEANE It's OK. BOBBY So Davy hasn't talked to anyone since? BILLY I see Davy. I just don't talk to him. BOBBY How is he? BILLY Drunk. JANEANE I tried calling him, but he didn't answer. BILLY That's because he doesn't have a home anymore. I just didn't want to say anything in front of Dad. JANEANE (in shock) God. He's homeless? My baby is homeless? BOBBY Why? BILLY I don't know. I can get him here if you want to see him. JANEANE Please get him to come home. BILLY Tell Dad (pause) I'll be back. Bobby and I went to catch up on things. BOBBY We did? BILLY That means you're coming with me. BOBBY Oh. OK. CUT TO: EXT- A busy street sidewalk. Billy and Bobby are walking next to each other talking. It is cold outside so they are bundled up and shivering occasionally. BILLY How's your job going? BOBBY I called my boss and took a two week leave of absence. Other than that, it's going great. How about you. What happened with you and Heather. BILLY I don't want to talk about it. BOBBY Oh. I understand. BILLY It's all said and done. BOBBY Where are we going? This is slum territory. BILLY Your brother is a street person. You didn't expect him to be a posh street person did you? BOBBY What do we do with him once we find him? BILLY I have a key to the house. We'll take him back and get him cleaned up. They approach David (Wahlberg) He doesn't notice them or recognize them. DAVID (to Bobby)Hey mister. That's a fine coat you got. Can you spare a dollar? BOBBY Jesus. This is him? DAVID What? Who are you? BOBBY You don't even recognize us? Has it been that long? BILLY You need to shave. Come on, get up. DAVID No. Who are you? BOBBY We're your brothers Davy, come on now, stop clowning around. DAVID Is that you Bobby? BOBBY Yes it's me. Unlike someone, I completed my years at Princeton. DAVID What's that supposed to mean? BILLY You been drinking? DAVID I'm broke. I couldn't drink if I wanted to. BILLY How long you been sober? DAVID Couple weeks. What do you want? Why did you come back? How'd you find me? BILLY I knew you were here. Dad had a heart attack. BOBBY Come with us. We're gonna get you cleaned up and you can see Dad. DAVID I don't want to see him. He's an ass. BOBBY You're going to. DAVID You can't make me. BOBBY I have a law degree. I can turn you in for vagrancy. DAVID You wouldn't. Bobby whips out his cell phone. DAVID Alright. I'll go. BILLY Man Davy, you stink. DAVID It tends to happen when you sleep in garbage. CUT TO: INT- The Masterson House- BATHROOM- David is taking a shower. The camera moves into the INT: Hallway. Bobby and Billy stand outside. BOBBY Where'd you get those clothes? BILLY They're mine. BOBBY They're too nice for him. He'll just mess them up. BILLY In respect to Dad, he gets to look nice. David opens the door. He is covered in a towel wrapped around his body. He is clean, his hair is combed, and he shaved. BILLY Much better. DAVID Those for me? BILLY Yeah. DAVID Thanks Billy. You're a real pal. You know that? BILLY Hurry up. Dad'll be out of surgery soon. CUT TO: INT- HOSPITAL ROOM Janeane and Luke are sitting on one chair together, waiting. LUKE Mommy. Is he going to die? JANEANE Of course not. Not now anyway. Eventually, Yes. Everyone dies eventually. LUKE I don't want Daddy to die. Luke embraces his mother. Billy, Bobby, and David enter the room. DAVID Hey ma. Janeane puts Luke down and runs to embrace her son. Billy and Bobby take a sideline. Janeane hugs David for a few moments. JANEANE It's so wonderful to see my four sons in the same room for the first time in eight years. David and Janeane stop hugging. David looks at Luke. DAVID And this must be my little brother. Come give your big brother a hug. Luke runs and gives this stranger a quick hug. David then picks up Luke and gives him a big, affectionate hug during which Luke giggles. LUKE What's your name? DAVID David. You can call me Davy if you like. LUKE I like David. My name is Lucas. You can call me Luke. DAVID OK Luke. BILLY (to Janeane) Any word yet? JANEANE Not yet. David and Billy take the two chairs. Bobby sits on the edge of the bed. Billy sees that his mother doesn't have a place to sit down. BILLY I didn't mean to take your seat (he didn't) Please, sit down Ma. Billy gets up and moves to sit on the floor. Luke plunks himself down next to Billy. Janeane sits down in Billy's former chair. JANEANE You didn't have to do that. BILLY I don't need a chair. The floor suits me well. LUKE Do you want to see my wart? BILLY You have a wart? Luke presents his wart to Billy. David plays along and looks too. BILLY Wow. Now that's a wart. You know I had a wart too when I was your age? LUKE Really? Was it as big as mine? BILLY No. Yours is definitely the coolest wart I've seen. LUKE Wow. BOBBY Oh please. Billy glares at Bobby. JANEANE So what.... The door opens and Dr Jones comes in. DR JONES Everything is fine. I just wanted to tell you that he's been moved to ICU for tonight. He can have this room back tomorrow. It's common for our post-op patients to be kept in ICU when our beds are down. That way they get more attention. JANEANE OK. CUT TO: ICU Room. Timothy is sitting up in his bed when Janeane, Billy, David, Bobby, and Luke walk in TIMOTHY My God. Timothy starts to cry. BILLY What's wrong? TIMOTHY My boys are together. In the same room. After all this time. BOBBY You know what they say about time Dad. It heals wounds. DAVID Dad. I just want to say that what I said that day, I was way (pause) I was really drunk. TIMOTHY I'm sorry about blaming your divorce on you. BOBBY And I'm sorry too. DAVID For what? BOBBY I didn't want to be left out. They all laugh. JANEANE The doctor said that if you are doing well you can come home Saturday. Timothy looks at Luke. TIMOTHY Did you find out about the game like I asked you? BILLY The 49ers came back in the 4th quarter. They scored 2 touchdowns and won. TIMOTHY Really? BILLY Of course not. The 49ers got killed. Timothy and Billy laugh. No one else does. The camera backs up and fades out. INT: The Kitchen. Janeane is cooking something Bobby walks in. JANEANE What did your father say? BOBBY He's OK. He can make it to the table. JANEANE Terrific! Tell your brothers that dinner is almost ready. Bobby walks away. We follow him up the stairs, down the upstairs hallway and into INT: Bobby and David's room. BOBBY Ma says dinner's about ready. DAVID Can we talk? BOBBY There's nothing to talk about. DAVID I think there is. BOBBY Look. Let's not ruin this. We're a family again. The past is gone. DAVID I messed life up for you and Dad. I'm sorry. BOBBY Yeah. Well, you're a drunk Davy. Drunks tend to screw things up for other people. DAVID I'm not drinking anymore. BOBBY So you say. DAVID I'm serious. BOBBY Whatever. Bobby walks out of the room, back through the hallway, down the stairs. As he walks through the kitchen we notice that Timothy is already downstairs and is sitting at the kitchen table. Bobby moves into the INT: DEN where Billy and Luke are sitting playing on Luke's Playstation. BOBBY Dinner's ready. BILLY OK man. Thanks. BOBBY I don't get you. BILLY What? BOBBY You never did grow up. BILLY So? BOBBY You haven't changed since you were like 14. BILLY Yeah Bobby, I did. I grew up. But I also know how to kick back without hurting other people. BOBBY Ass. Bobby walks out of the room and into INT: THE KITCHEN David comes down the stairs and Bobby and David sit down. JANEANE Boys. Come on. Can't you pause it? LUKE (O.S) Coming! Billy walks into the room carrying Luke who is giggling (again). They sit down and Janeane serves them. There isn't enough seats at the table for Janeane to eat. JANEANE It's OK. I can eat when one of you is done. Billy picks up Luke and puts him on his lap. BILLY Problem solved. Luke can eat on my lap. Billy moves his plate out of the way and moves Luke's over in front of them. LUKE Cool! JANEANE Thanks Billy. TIMOTHY This food is great honey. JANEANE It's all low-fat stuff. You aren't supposed to have stuff that is high in fat or calories anymore. It's not safe. TIMOTHY I know. BOBBY I have to go back tomorrow night. They need me. Somebody just filed a negligence lawsuit against the company and I need to get back. JANEANE So soon? BOBBY Yeah. BILLY I'm moving in officially to my house on Friday. JANEANE That's terrific. I can go back to work now. Luke has a place to go after school. BILLY (to Timothy) Won't you still be home? TIMOTHY I've got cases Billy. I have to get back to work. DAVID What did Luke do when you guys were at work? LUKE My homework. Playstation. My girlfriend would come over and we'd play. BILLY You've got a girlfriend? LUKE Yep. BILLY Wow. Is she cool? LUKE She's taller than I am! BILLY Wow. CUT TO: EXT- The back yard. Bobby and Billy are sitting on the grass talking, drinking beer. BILLY This has to be the easiest thing Ma has ever asked us to do. BOBBY It's great that Dad can't drink beer anymore and we have to drink it all up. David walks outside, grabs a beer off of the lawn and sits down next to Billy. BILLY I thought you didn't drink anymore. DAVID I can't have a cool one with my bro's? BOBBY One turns into two, two into three, then before you know it, you've got another black eye. DAVID Naw. That won't happen. BOBBY That's what you always say, before you go and shoot your life down the toilet. How did you end up on the street? On the street for God's sake. DAVID Screw you. BOBBY No David. Tell me. BILLY Guys. BOBBY You guys look at me like I'm the bad guy. I ran around on Lauren. You guys never even called when she divorced me. Not one call. BILLY It had been awhile.... BOBBY I'm your brother Billy. She didn't leave me because she saw me with another woman. She knew I was running around. She left me because she didn't love me anymore. She was a lesbian. And here's the kicker for you, she was staying with me until I got her pregnant so that her and her queer lover can raise a child together. BILLY Didn't you get some kind of custody deal? BOBBY What can I do? She told me that if I gave her custody, she wouldn't take what she's legally entitled to. And since she could have easily brought up my indiscretions, I could have lost everything. What's a child anyway, besides a tax write off. BILLY That's bullshit Bobby. You can't say that. If I had a kid, God. Heather and I were going to have a kid someday. DAVID What happened? You guys were going out like forever. BOBBY Didn't she screw around. BILLY I don't want to talk about it. BOBBY Why? BILLY Nothing. Bobby looks at Billy. BOBBY Oh shit. I know you. You're lying. You were always a bad liar. DAVID Huh? BILLY Don't Bobby. BOBBY And Mom and Dad gave me shit when I got divorced. What is this? How can you sleep knowing that they revere you as a God? BILLY Shut up. DAVID I don't get it. Bobby stands up. BOBBY Heather didn't run around on you, did she? Who was she Billy? Is that why you quit your job? BILLY She was my boss. BOBBY (laughs) Oh! BILLY Shutup. DAVID She didn't screw anyone? BILLY Nope. BOBBY How'd she find out? BILLY My boss got pregnant. BOBBY Shit. BILLY Yep. She called me one night to tell me she was pregnant and she was going to tell her husband it was his. BOBBY How'd she know it was yours? BILLY They hadn't had sex in a while. DAVID Won't he find out? BILLY Nope. BOBBY So you quit? BILLY I keep my retirement money and I was sent off with 2 years pay. I was going to blackmail her. I had nothing to lose. Heather had already left. I keep my benifits as long as she's top dog. BOBBY Impressive. Looks like none of us are squeaky clean anymore. BILLY You got your wish, David. DAVID What? BILLY I fucked up. DAVID You're my brother. That's the last... BILLY Oh really? DAVID Of course. BILLY So in high school, when you got busted for possession and you told the principal it was mine? DAVID You didn't get expelled. BILLY No. It was embarassing. Davy, I was valedictiorian for God's sake. DAVID So? BILLY So? Everyone was looking at me as some kind of God. Then my jealous half-ass brother says that the pot he smokes is yours. I had to beg the principal not to suspend you. DAVID Is that why I only got detention? BILLY I threatened to expose him and one of the teachers affairs. BOBBY I find it hilarious that you've blackmailed your way through life. BILLY What about you? I know your money isn't clean. BOBBY Actually, it is. My company has a few problems, but that comes along with any large corporation. I get paid 7 figures to make sure that the shit doesn't hit the fan. I'm good at what I do, the shit doesn't hit the fan. BILLY So when someone dies due to one of your products? BOBBY We settle out of court. Everything is out of court. The company doesn't care how much money it costs to settle, just as long as it's not in the paper the next day. BILLY How much money does the company lose per year? BOBBY None. Because we haven't had a single consumer lawsuit hit the news, everyone thinks we are in tip-top shape. BILLY Are you? BOBBY Hell no. Our company can't keep itself from getting sued. We make even every year. DAVID (really drunk by now) Don't you shits care about me? BILLY You're drunk again. BOBBY Shit. DAVID You haven't even asked me what I think or what I do. BILLY OK Davy. How'd you end up on the street? Huh? DAVID Crack addiction. I lost all my money to a dealer. BOBBY I'm sorry. David stands up. DAVID (shouting) I don't want your pity. I don't need your half-ass attempt to reconnect with me. I don't need you. BILLY Davy, you're drunk. DAVID Damn right I'm drunk. I haven't felt this good in weeks. BOBBY Sit down man. Come on. DAVID Shut up. David whacks Bobby over the head with his bottle. It breaks over his head and cuts Bobby's forehead. BOBBY Shit. David starts to walk away but Billy tackles him. BILLY You need to dry out. Bobby gets up, bleeding pretty well. BOBBY Billy. Get off for a second. Billy gets off David and backs off. David gets up. Bobby punches him in the face. DAVID Is that all? Bobby roundhouses David down onto the grass. BOBBY Apparently you can fight with Tae-Bo. Billy laughs. BOBBY I'm gonna have you checked into a rehab clinic. DAVID I ain't going to a rehab clinic. I'm outta here. BOBBY You're gonna walk 200 miles home? DAVID I can hitch a ride. BOBBY No one will pick up a drunk like you. Look at yourself. The cops wouldn't even pick you up. David charges at Bobby and headbutts him in the gut. Bobby grabs David by the waist, and picks him up, holding him by the legs. David is now upside down. BOBBY Let's go inside. Bobby drags a squirming David inside. Billy follows. INT: The Den. The brothers walk through the sliding glass door. TIMOTHY What happened? BILLY Nothing. We've got it. DAVID Assholes. You guys are assholes! David grabs Bobby's crotch. Bobby lets David go. David stands up and backs away. TIMOTHY David. Are you drunk again? DAVID No. BILLY Yes. TIMOTHY Get out. DAVID You're throwing me out? TIMOTHY I don't want anything else to happen. Leave. DAVID Fine. I'll leave. I'll be sleeping downtown somewhere. That's the great thing about being a street bum. You can sleep anywhere. David storms out. TIMOTHY Street bum? BILLY Dad. David is a druggie and a drunk. He lives on the streets. TIMOTHY My son lives on the streets? BILLY Sorry. BOBBY I gotta leave in the morning. I'm gonna head to bed. TIMOTHY Stay a moment. I want to talk to you. Billy gets the drift and leaves. TIMOTHY I know we've had our differences. BOBBY Yeah. You could say that. TIMOTHY If anything happens to me and your mother (pause) I just wanted to tell you (pause) everything's taken care of. BOBBY What are you talking about? TIMOTHY Billy gets half of everything and custody of Luke. You get the other half. BOBBY I don't need the money, Dad. TIMOTHY Let me finish. Billy's half is the money. Your half is this house and the cars. BOBBY I'll give it to David. TIMOTHY There's something I need to tell you about David. Sit down. Bobby sits across from Timothy. TIMOTHY Billy already knows. When you were 6 and Billy hadn't even been born yet, your mother's sister died giving childbirth. She had overdosed on cocaine because she couldn't handle the birth.
