Summer and Zoe leave to find Kate

The scene switches to the end of the school day out in the parking lot by Jake's jeep.

John
Yo man. Why did you diss me like that.

Zach

Excuse me honey? Could you please not use those kind of terms around me.

Zach
Sorry babe. Hey guys. Summer and I are going to hit the road. She has to be home at 4.

John
It's three o clock.

Zach

Summer and Zach hop into Zach's car (Mustang Convertible) and drive away.

Jake and John hop into Jake's Jeep and follow Zoe and Kate.

Zoe pulls into her driveway and into the garage. The girls get out and wave at the guys.

OK. Thanks for the ride Zoe!

Jake drives away.

John

So John helped me get ready. I still hadn't found her house yet. So I called my dad, Mike. I actually call him Mike. Everyone calls him Mike when you get on personal level with him.

Back to real life

Mike. Hey I need your help. I need you to find out who moved from Hawaii in the past week and the location of the house.

Mike
Big date tonight?

Jake
Yeah. Trying to impress her.

Mike
I'll get someone on that right away. We should know within five minutes. Which car are you going to take?

Jake
Probably just the Jeep.

Mike
Alright. I'm going to bring my date home tonight, so if my room is rockin'...

Jake

I just got the address. It's 548 Worschire Avenue.

Oh I'll walk. Maybe my mom will need last minute preparations or something.

So. I have to know. What was it like seeing pictures of your mom.

Kate
I never saw the pictures. I was at the photo shoot.

Zoe
You were at a Playboy photo shoot.

Kate
Yeah. And I went to the mansion.

Zoe

Kate

Kate leaves and heads toward her home.
Later on the scene begins at Kate's house where Jake is parking in front of the house on their circle driveway.

Jake walks up to the door, flowers in hand, and rings the doorbell.

Hello, you must be Kate's Mom.

Kelly
Call me Kelly. Please.

Kelly grabs Jakes hand and puts it to her breast.

Jake

Is that Jake?

Kate comes around the corner just as Kelly releases Jake's hand.

The one downstairs has a fresh floor on it that's still drying. You're going to have to use the upstairs one. Take a right at the top, not a left. There are no bathrooms to the left.

Jake
Got it.

Jake gets up and walks upstairs. At the top of the stairs he takes a right and starts to walk past Kelly's room. He happens to look in and sees Kelly sitting on her bed, naked, holding a vibrator.

Jake

Kelly jumps a bit but calms down immediately.

The batteries are dead.

Zoe's Dad and Kelly start acting out the scene.

The camera focuses in on Jake who is having a day dream.

We can see Kate and Kelly both dancing nude in a field of flowers. Jake runs out nude and the three of them are dancing in one big circle. Then they both begin kissing him.

Jake stops dreaming when Zoe's Dad touches him.

Jake gets up and walks over to Kate.

The scene changes to lunch in the commons area.

Jake runs off to his jeep climbs in and drives off.
The scene changes to Jake arriving in front of Kate's house. He gets out and walks up to the door and rings the bell. Kelly answers.

The scene changes to in front of Kate's locker in between classes. Jake is walking up to Kate who is standing in front of her locker.

Let me guess. My mom came on to you again.

Jake
OH YEAH.

Kate
What did she do this time?

Jake
She got naked.

Kate

The toilet flushes and Summer comes out.

Nothing. When we woke up at seven, she was gone.

Kate, Zoe, and John continue the scene leaving Jake and Zach behind.

Everyone was at my Christmas party last year. Summer was eating and eating for a while. Then she sat down and talked with Zach for a while. When I came over and sat down, Summer said she had to go to the bathroom. I told her where it was and she left. I actually had to go to the bathroom right after her and when I went in, the whole room smelled like vomit because she forgot to flush. When I asked her about it she changed the subject.

Why haven't you said anything?

Zoe. Did you know too?

No. This isn't something you can control.

That night at Jake's house. Jake's dad is setting food down on the table that Jake and Kate are sitting at.

Kate gets up and gives Mike a going away type hug. Mike leaves.

Kate
Off the record. No wonder why your dad gets laid so often He's a sexy guy. Very polite. That really turns women on.

Jake
Spare me the details.

Kate
After 2 minutes with my mom, he'd be banging her.

Jake
Good. Maybe then she'll stop going after me. I want to develop a serious relationship with you, but I feel like I can't do that if your mom is trying to do me every time I turn around.

At that moment, Kate and Jake experience their first real true love moment.

Jake and Kate get up and run for his bedroom. They walk in and shut the door.

My first girlfriend was Zoe.

For about two years, our Freshman and Sophmore years. John moved in during my Sophmore year when Zoe and I weren't doing so well. I let him have her.

Jake
Zach is my best friend. John my second best. We've gone through a lot together. But we can talk about that later. We've got more important matters to discuss.

Kate unzips Jake's pants and takes them off. She does the same with his shirt, shoes and socks. She then takes off her pants.

Jake
You really want to do this?

Kate
Where do you keep your condoms?

Jake

Jake runs down the hallway to his fathers room grabs the box and runs back.

Jake

Kate

Scene fades to black due to common decency.
Next day at school Zoe, Kate, Jake and John are at the table.

Zoe
Kate and I are going to the premiere of my dad's new movie in downtown LA. A lot of hot guys will be there. Too bad Summer still isn't feeling well or she'd go too.

John
I talked to Zach last night. He believed me & started crying. I think he went over there but I....

Jake
About what?

John
Summer vomits after every meal.

Jake

Zoe
She really does.

Jake
And you told Zach? Are you nuts?

Kate
Shit. (Kate is looking through her backpack.)

Jake
What?

Kate
I really hate to ask you to do this again, but I left my English book at home again. Will you run and get it for me?

Jake
Of course. John, cover for me?

John
Sure. Coach won't even care.

Jake
By the way, when does football practice start up again.

John
Coach says Friday if his ulcer isn't acting up again.

Jake
I'll see you guys in a bit. (He leaves and gives Kate a kiss on the cheek on his way out)

Kate
John. Go away for a minute. Girl talk.

John
Right. (John leaves)

Kate
Zoe. What happened with you and Jake?

Zoe
We were having family problems at the same time. My mom and dad wanted me to move out temporarily so they could shoot a movie between themselves without me in the house. At the same time Jake's mom was coming in and out randomly breaking stuff in the house. Jake wanted to have me stay with him, but was afraid for me. So I stayed with John and ended up doing it with John. Jake's cool with it though.

Kate
OK.

Later at Kate's house. Jake pulls up. He rings the doorbell. There is a slight pause and then Kelly answers the door naked.

Kelly
I had a feeling it would be you.

Jake
Not again.

Kelly
Do me a favor. I need a massage. You can feel free to have a bottle of wine if you want.

Jake
If I give you a massage and have some wine will you let me go?

Kelly
Of course. I'm a reasonable person.

Jake
OK. Lie down.

Jake takes the glass of wine already poured off of the table and drinks it. He immediatly passes out. When he awakens he finds himself lying next to Kelly in bed, naked.

Jake
Oh... my..... god.

Kelly
Was it good for you too?

Jake
You tricked me! That drink was drugged.

Kelly
So? I'm a bad girl? So spank me?

Jake
Can't you understand I love Kate? With all my heart? You have a scheduled sexual encounter with my dad tonight, since you guys are perfect for each other so leave me alone!

Jake's cell phone rings. Kelly answers it.

Kelly
Jake's cell phone. (pause) (to Jake) What a surprise. It's for you.

Jake
Hello. (pause) What? (Shocked) Zach slow down. I'll be right over. Stay there.

Kelly
What?

Jake
Summer just started coughing up blood and passed out. I have to go.

Kelly
I'm sorry (getting serious) Anything I can do?

Jake
Call Kate's cell phone and tell her to get Zoe and John and meet us at the hospital.

Jake runs out of the house. A few minutes later Jake's jeep flies into Summer's driveway. Zach carries Summer out of the house and puts her in the backseat.

Zach
I didn't know who to call. I just called you.

Jake grabs his cell phone.

Jake
Here. Call her parents and tell her to meet us at the hospital

Zach
OK.

Jake speeds toward the hospital but ironically is pulled over by a cop.

Jake
You've got to be kidding me.

Cop gets out of car and goes up to Jake

Cop
20 mph over is jail time.

Jake
Do you see the girl in the backseat.

Cop
Yeah?

Jake
Unconsious. We're trying to get her to a hospital. She was coughing up blood.

Cop
Well then. Follow me.

Jake
Thanks.

The cop gets back in his car and pulls out. Jake follows him. They pull up in front of the emergency part of the hospital. Kate, Zoe and John are waiting in the lobby.

Kate
What's wrong?

Jake
Get a nurse.

Zach
Are her parents here yet?

Zoe
No. What happened?

Zach
She just started coughing up blood.

Doctor and Nurse run up.

Doctor
What happened to her.

Zach
She started coughing up blood and passed out.

Doctor
Why?

Zach
She's got a disease. Bulemia

Doctor
Has she sought help?

Zach
Not yet. She was going to.

Nurse
Are her parents here?

Zoe
Not yet.

Zach
She's eighteen.

Doctor
Are you her boyfriend?

Zach
Yes.

Doctor
You come with us. Everyone else stay here.

Zach, Doctor, and Nurse run off.

Kate
Did my mom give you any trouble?

Jake
No.

Kate
You were gone for like an hour.

Jake
OK. Lets go outside.

Kate and Jake walk outside of the Emergency room to talk when Summer's parents pull up.

Her Mom
Jake! Where is she? What happened?

Her Dad
Is she OK?

Jake
She started coughing up blood and passed out. Did you know she was bulemic?

Her Dad
Not my daughter! No way!

Her Mom
Honey her friends know her better than we do. (to Jake) For how long.

Kate
For about a year.

Her Dad
Impossible. My Summer would have no reason to do that!

Kate
She told me it was because you teased her about being fat when she was younger.

Jake
She couldn't take it anymore so she started throwing up after every meal.

The doctor rushes out.

Doctor
Are you her parents?

Her Dad
Yes. How bad is it?

Doctor
Come with me.

Her Mom
I want her friends to come too if there is room.

Doctor
I have enough room for 4 more people. Her parents and two of her friends.

Her Mom
Jake, can you and Zoe come?

Jake
Sure. Kate.......

Kate
I understand. Go.

Jake rushes in with Summer's parents.

Jake
Come on Zoe. We get to see her.

Jake, the parents, Zoe and the doctor leave the scene as Kate comes back in.

Kate
Left out?

John
Yeah.

Kate
Talk to me about what happened with Zoe and Jake.

John
Well....

Scene fades to an emotional hospital room. The doctor is in the middle of explaining what happened to Summer, who is still unconsious.

Doctor
We felt that an operation could kill her. She's got very little time left. We figured that you would probably want to spend it at her side.

Zach
I'm so sorry.

Her Mom
It's OK Zach, none of this was your fault.

Doctor
As I was saying, her constant vomiting ate away at the lining in her stomach and throat. She's probably been internally bleeding for the past 24 to 36 hours.

Her Dad
How much longer?

Doctor
5, 10 minutes maybe.

Her Mom
Will she wake up?

Doctor
Unlikely.

Zoe reaches down and kisses Summer on the forehead and begins to cry.

Zoe
(while crying) You'll always be my best friend. Always.

Zoe runs out of the room. Zach puts his head on her shoulder and kisses it.

Her Mom
My poor baby.

Her Dad
(crying) I..... (he drops to his knees) Oh god!

Her Mom
(to Jake) I can't be in here with her when she dies. Can you stay in here and let me know? (pause) As a favor to a friend?

Jake
Yeah (shakily) You guys should probably wait outside.

Her dad gets up and moves toward Summer, still crying, and kisses her on the cheek.

Her Dad
You'll always be daddy's little girl.

Her Mom
Come on Frank, it's Zach's turn.

The parents leave the room, crying. Zach just lies there with his head against her shoulder.

Zach
I wish you could wake up. I just wanted to tell you one last time that I love you, I'll always love you. You should have told me sooner then we could have worked things out. But you didn't and I'm so sorry that you didn't. Someday we'll be together again. I'll probably have a new wife and some kids, but I'll never have stopped loving you.

Jake
She knows.

Doctor
I'm going to step outside. (to Jake) let me know when she's gone.

Jake
What am I? Death himself?

Zach puts his right hand on Summer's head and plays with her hair.

Zach
She always liked it when I played with her hair.

Jake
She loves you, you know that right?

Zach
Of course. I spent today lying with her in her bed reading her stories and stuff.

Jake
Did she tell you she felt bad?

Zach
She told me she had a stomach ache, but I thought it was just from eating her first meal in 2 days and not throwing it back up.

Summer wakes up but just for a moment.

Summer
Jake? What's wrong.

Jake
Sweet Jesus.

Zach
Get her parents! Summer, I want to let you know that I love you.

Jake runs out of the room to fetch her parents.

Zach
I'm going to let you talk to your parents. Don't die on me.

Summer
I'm dying?

Zach
You have internal bleeding.

Summer
Oh God.

Jake runs in with her parents.

Her Mom
There's my baby.

Her Dad
That's daddy's little girl.

Zach
I love you till the end of time.

Zach gets up and leaves with Jake. Summers eyes follow Zach out of the room.

Her Dad
I'm so sorry I did this

Summer
Tell Zach that I'll always be in his heart. All he has to do is look.

Her Mom
I will.

Her Dad
How do you feel?

Summer
My tummy hurts but other than that I feel OK.

Doctor comes in.

Doctor
You are on morphine. You actually did better than I had thought. (to parents) If you wish, I think I might be able to stop the bleeding and go into surgery.

Her Dad
What are her chances of living if you complete the surgery?

Doctor
If I complete the surgery, 90%. But there is also a 75% chance she will still die during the surgery. It's a very risky surgery, one we cannot perform very often.

Her Mom
Whatever you can do, please do.

Her parents give her each a kiss before the nurse rushes in the room and the doctor and the nurse wheel her out.

An hour or so later everyone is waiting in a private waiting room. The Doctor opens the door, takes off his head cover and shakes his head.

Zach
(almost a whisper) Summer........

Her Mom
Can we see her one last time.

Doctor
Sure.

Her Dad
(crying ) Zach. Do you want to come?

Zach
No thanks. The last memory I have of her is her telling me that she loves me. And that's the one I want to have for the rest of my life.

John
You OK?

Zach
I'll be fine.

Summers parents leave the room and the gang gets up to leave.

Jake
You guys want to go to my house to talk?

Kate
Our parents.............. (hinting)

Jake
Or maybe it's better to go to Kate's house.

Zach
That's fine. I'm good, really.

CUT TO: Kate's house. Kelly isn't home.

Jake
Kate and I need to talk, so if you need us, we'll be upstairs.

Kate and Jake walk upstairs and into her bedroom. The camera follows them with one last shot thrown in of Zach being depressed.

Kate
What are you trying to tell me.

Jake
You mother, when I was getting your book told me....

Kate
Oh that? She told me about that over the phone and how she drugged you. She's really sorry and promised me she won't ever come onto you again.

Jake
(pauses) You're OK (pauses again) with that?

Kate
Why not? You chose me instead of a Playboy model. That's the most romantic thing anyone has ever done.

Jake
You find it OK that I.........

Kate
(interrupts) It's fine..... really.

Jake
Then lets go back downstairs.

Kate
I love you.

Kate gives Jake a kiss on the lips and they fall down on the bed. Fade scene out to an hour from now. Jake and Kate are leaving her bedroom.

Kate
That was great.

Jake
Third times the charm!

They walk back downstairs. John and Zoe are sitting on the couch waiting for something.

Jake
Where's Zach?

John
He went to the bathroom.

Jake
OK. How long has he been gone?

Zoe
5 or 10 minutes.

Kate
(starting to panic) Which one? Upstairs or down?

John
Why?

Kate
(insisting) Which one?

John
Downstairs.

Kate runs to the bathroom and opens the door. Zach hung himself from the shower head, put soap on the bottom of the shower so he would slip and lose his balance. Kate touches Zach's motionless face as he hangs there with a blue face.

Kate
Oh Zach.

Jake is coming

Jake
(from outside room) What's the deal Kate?

Kate
Don't come in here.

Jake
(enters room) Oh my god.

Kate
Please Jake. Go back outside (calling) John! Come get Jake and pull him back into the living room. Zoe call 911 and let them know that we have a suicide victim here. Zach is dead.

Jake
Zach! No! Oh god no!

Zoe
(in disbelief) Zach killed himself? (from outside of room)

John
(runs into the room) Zach! (in almost a whisper) I'm sorry man.

Zoe
(now in room also) Come on Jake.

Jake
(crying) Why! Fucking God Damn why!

John
Come on Jake. Let's get out of here.

Kate
(trying to hold Jake back) Please Jake.

Jake gets up and lunges at Zach's body, holds onto Zach's knees and just cries.

SCENE CHANGE- Zach and Summer's Funeral. Over 500 people have circled the two caskets. Zach and Summer's parents are seated, crying with Jake, Kate, John, and Zoe on either side. The Minister has just finished his speech.

Minister
I understand that some students have some things to say about Zach Major and Summer Fletcher.

Zoe
Summer was my best friend ever since we attended the same day care when we were 2. She always wanted to be a movie star. I remember the time when Summer went out for the high school play. I can't remember the title (voice breaks). She lost the part because the instructor told her she "didn't fit into the part". Many people used to tease her about her weight, and finally she did something about it. Something that killed her. Zach loved her. He would have taken her place if he could. When she died he told me it felt like he was a bird and god had just broken his wings. I hope that Summer's death will not be forgotten. (she begins to cry) I will miss Summer and Zach.

Zoe goes to sit down. A soft applause comes, but only from Zach and Summer's parents who have stopped crying to pay attention. John gets up and goes up to speak.

John
I've only lived here for a little less than 3 years. I'll be graduating soon, and it won't be the same without Zach. When we first moved here, my furniture hadn't gotten here and Zach let me crash at his place. I was there for like a week before my furniture arrived. Zach, Jake, and I are like brothers. We know everything about each other and yet I never saw this coming. Zach was a great football player, but a better friend. I want to say this because Zach worked hard for this. He had been saving money to get Summer an engagement ring ( the crowd goes silent). He was going to propose at Graduation in front of everyone. When Summer died, I could see that his life has been ripped away. Zach didn't kill himself, he was already dead, he just didn't know it yet. I will really miss Zach and Summer.

John sits down. Zach's mom gets up and gives John a hug before he sits down. Jake gets up and moves to make his speech.

Jake
Seniors and underclassmen. You have just lost two of the finest students ever to grace our hallways. Zach, definitely the heart of our football team, and the star player of our baseball team. Summer was a cheerleader and active in key club and student council. She was voted by her senior class for being "Mrs Congeniality". She loved everyone and never made anyone feel left out. When I met Summer in the second grade, she was a geeky girl that everyone picked on. My friend Zoe couldn't even stop her torture. It wasn't until her Freshman year, when Summer got a makeover and changed her first name to Summer instead of Elizabeth, that she became popular. Guys wanted her, but she had already been taken by Zach who had been her boyfriend since the sixth grade. Some people say that suicide is the worst thing ever. Zach didn't kill himself. Summer didn't kill herself. Summer's death came through constant teasing by her peers, that today, chant stories about their friendships with her. You all out there cannot truthfully say you knew Summer, because you didn't. Zoe knew her. John knew her. Zach knew her. I knew her. Her parents knew her most of the time. The rest of you can go to hell. You killed her, and in turn killed Zach. He had no life left when his girlfriend of 6 years died. The one he was going to propose to. You all can just go to hell.

Jake returns to his seat only to get hugs from both parents, Zoe, Kate, and John, plus applause from the crowd. Jake's speech hit the mark.

Kate
I think you made a huge impact.

The school's principal gets up on the stage.

Principal
As principal of the school I would like all students to attend the assembly tomorrow to tackle issues like suicide, anorexia, and bullemia. Issues that are resulting more and more in teen deaths.

Fade out to Kate's house. One Month Later. Jake and Kate are alone.

Kate
We are alone.

Jake
Very alone.


Kate
Wow. You move fast

Jake
I'm horny.

Jake and Kate slam down on the couch and start making out when Mike and Kelly come in.

Mike
Hey guys.

Jake and Kate stop immediately and sit up.

Jake
God dad! Did you have to barge in like that?

Kate
Mom? Do you mind?

Kelly
Sorry honey, Jake. Mike has an announcement.

Mike
We're engaged!

Jake and Kate phase out and just stare at them in disbelief.

Jake
Fuck. (Jake faints)

Kate
I'm pregnant.

Mike and Kelly both look at Kate and back at each other with odd looks before they each faint.

The END

Special Public Service Announcement before the credits roll. The main cast (the actors who play Jake, Zach, John, Kate, Summer, and Zoe) are seated on stools in front of a white curtain.

Summer
Angst was written to bring issues like teen suicide and anorexia nervosa and bulleima into the average persons mind.

John
Teens die everyday from something that should have been prevented.

Zoe
This has to stop. If you are depressed or are suffering from anorexia nervosa or another disorder, please talk to someone.

Zach
If you are a parent and think your child may be having problems. Please talk to them. Get them the help they need.

Kate
If you know someone who may be having problems, tell someone. Speak out. You not talking could put their life in danger. Don't worry about losing your friendship. Worry about losing your friend.

Jake
The characters in this movie are not real, although they may seem bigger than life. If you could find it in your hearts to not pick on your peers then we could all live happy lives without preventable deaths occuring everywhere we turn. Take the time, make a friend, save a life.
